Bridgeport, Armour Square, and Chinatown residents are fighting Amtrak’s plan to relocate a major 24/7 maintenance operation from its current largely nonresidential industrial site near Roosevelt Road and Canal Street to the Canal Street rail yard, directly alongside homes in our densely populated neighborhood.
We’re asking a simple question: Why move a round-the-clock industrial operation out of a nonresidential area and put it next to people’s homes?
Residents were brought into the conversation only after the project was already well underway, and serious questions remain about the site-selection process, environmental review, potential impacts on our community, and who knew about the plans and when.
We’re asking Amtrak to stop the Canal Street project and find an appropriate alternative location. Area residents deserve answers about how this site was selected, how its potential impacts were evaluated, and why the community was brought into the process so late.
